Many pupils in the 13-16 age group find it difficult to raise an interest in technology. The subject is abstract and pupils find it difficult to see the value in being good at anything other than percentages and addition. Pupils need both inspiration and a bit of “reality” to encourage their studies.
In the longer term this lack of interest will be a problem both for engineering companies and for Sweden. The Rinkeby School has made a name for itself as a school that takes problems seriously. They work continuously to ensure that pupils from different backgrounds are given the right conditions for enjoyment and development.
The school has consciously focused on pupils who need support, not least in the subject of Mathematics. And this has resulted in Knightec currently coaching two year nine classes in the school. The benefits are mutual.
Pupils at Rinkeby School get to meet real engineers, and Knightec’s activities include inspiration days, coaching and projects during special engineering weeks at the school. For Knightec, the partnership means that the company gains invaluable knowledge of how young people with their roots in a number of different cultures think and feel. An important contribution to Knightec’s efforts to achieve diversity.
